Job Description

 

An architect is involved in the planning, designing and overseeing of a building's construction. Architects specialize in designing residential, industrial, institutional  or public buildings. They are responsible for the creative aspect of the building, and to ensure that their creations are functinal, economic, safe and satisfy the desire of the people that live in them.

 

Education Requirements

 

In Ontario and all of US a license is required to practice Architecture. This is achieved through the fallowing:

  • Earn a professional degree in Architecture from a university program accredited by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB)
  • Complete a period of practical training or internship ? through an apprenticeship program credited by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.
  • Pass all divisions of the Architect Registration Examination.
High school required courses
  • English (ENG4U ? a final grade of at least 75%)
  • Advanced Functions and Introductory Calculus
  • Geometry and Discrete Mathematics
  • Physics
  • A final grade of at least 70%

Recommended high school courses

 

  • Grade 11 or 12 University level Art courses
  • Independent art studies
  • Creative and cultural studies such as visual arts and history

University Requirements

·         5 Years Bachelor of Architecture Degree, divided into:

o        4 years Bachelor of Architectural Studies, Honors Cooperative Degree.

o        This degree includes 5 mandatory 4 month terms of cooperative work experience accompanied by 4 work reports.

o        This is followed by a one year Master of Architecture Degree.

o         The passing average for the Honors BAS Degree is 70%.

o        The entry average to the Master of Architecture Degree is 75%

·          With a professional undergraduate degree in Architecture or related areas

o        A 2 years Master of Architecture is required.

·          With degree in other disciplines

o        3 or 4 years Master of Architecture degree is required.

Requirements for license in Ontario

·         Be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada

·         Have a degree in architecture from a post secondary institution.

·         Have a Certification from the Canadian Architectural Certification Board

·         Successfully completed the admission course offered by the Ontario Association of Architects

·         Have successfully completed a total of 5,600 hours work experience from which:

o       At least 2,780 hours worked under the supervision of an architect

o       At least 940 hours of experience in Ontario under the supervision and direction of an architect achieved within 3 years prior to the application for the license.

·         Pass the Architect Registration Examination of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (http://www.ncarb.org/certification/).

Documentation required when applying for an architect license

  • Completed application for License
  • Evidence of certification by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board, if not previously submitted
  • Evidence of completion of the Architect Registration Examination  if not completed through the Ontario Association of Architects
  • reference names of two licensed/registered architects
  • evidence of required work experience gained in accordance with the Internship in Architecture Program (IAP)
  • Evidence of 940 hours of work experience in Ontario gained under the personal supervision and direction of an architect licensed in Ontario, which must be gained within three years prior to submitting an application for License
  • Evidence of citizenship/immigration status in Canada.
