Gold Seal Monthly Update – May, 2008

  • With four months gone in 2008 Gold Seal has received almost 300 applications. The current year looks like it will be on par with 2007’s record certification rate.

  • The Winnipeg Construction Association recently held a breakfast meeting for 50 Gold Seal certified personnel.  Staff provided a program update including refinements to the Construction Safety Coordinator exam and a marked increase in the variety of construction management courses being offered across the country.  Participants provided valuable feedback on Gold Seal, noting in particular that they wanted their company executives to be more aware of the value of the program.

  • In a similar vein the Niagara Construction Association held a Gold Seal information event for its members.  Interest was strong from individuals and company representatives.  The day also included training for Association personnel as well as a meeting with local college representatives.

  • Winnipeg has also announced the latest Gold Seal Designated Project, a partnership between the Winnipeg Construction Association, Red River College and Bockstael Construction Ltd.  The construction of the $15 million Red River College Heavy Equipment Transportation Centre will include best-efforts to certify all construction management staff by the end of the project.

  • Gold Seal exam dates for 2009 have been set for January 23, April 17 and October 9.  Because of the much higher volume of exam candidates, it is strongly suggested that applicants submit all documentation at least one month in advance of the exam date.

About the Gold Seal Program

The CCA Gold Seal Certification Program is a national certification program for construction Project Managers, Superintendents, Estimators and Owners? Project Managers. Certification is based on the candidate's education, experience and their ability to satisfy the rigorous standards of the Program. This may mean the successful completion of a Gold Seal exam. Over 60 individuals are writing the new Construction Safety Coordinator exam
21 are writing to become certified as Gold Seal Estimator, 52 as Gold Seal Superintendent, 51 as Gold Seal Project Manager and 2 as Gold Seal Owner?s Project Manager
As in previous years the General Contracting group is the largest with 74 applicants

With 71 Senior Practitioner certifications and 23 Gold Seal Interns in 2007 so far, the year promises to be a busy one for Gold Seal

The CCA is receiving an increasing number of calls from companies making Gold Seal certification ?the industry standard? for construction managers.  One Toronto company with $200 million in annual business noted that ?It?s a must for our managers.?  Another of similar size mentioned ?We?ve been considering Gold Seal for a year or two and decided to make it a company policy that all our front line staff (project managers, estimators and site superintendents) should become Gold Seal certified.  We?re starting to see cases where Gold Seal is mandatory for projects, so this is a proactive move on our part.  But more importantly, we see our staff qualifications as critical to doing a quality job ? and they?re a great sales tool as well.?

Over the past few years industry has signaled its very strong interest in seeing Gold Seal certification for foremen and front-line supervisors, a group being affected by severe skills shortages as well as substantial change in knowledge requirements.  The CCA is participating with the Construction Sector Council in developing a ?national skills profile? for this critical group ? the resulting profile, due in late 2008, will be an essential component of any future training and certification.
