Construction in Ontario - February 2010 Edition

In the wake of the tragic construction accident that occurred on Christmas Eve which left four workers dead and another seriously injured, Minister of Labour Peter Fonseca announced a broad and comprehensive review the Province's workplace safety system. 

The Ontario Ministry of Labour recruited 41 new inspectors to cover various sectors within the province. The cohort will join 200 other inspectors hired in 2006.

At a recent Ministry of Labour Safe at Work Ontario (SAWO) Construction Stakeholder Engagement Session ministry officials provided a brief history of the SAWO enforcement strategy, a review of activities and results in 2009-10 and provided a glimpse at what is in store for the year ahead.

A recent newsletter from the law firm Sherrard Kuzz LLP provided employers with a simple checklist of what they should do now to get ready to comply with the workplace violence and harassment amendments.

The Toronto Construction Association reported on a successful 2009 on all fronts at its annual tally and bunfest.
