Job Description

Mechanical Engineer?s field involves the application of principles of physics for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems, requiring a strong understanding of key concepts such as mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics and energy. This career involves the design, development, manufacture, sales, operations and maintenance of machinery and devices that produce, transmit or consume power or employ heat energy in everything from aircraft engines to railway locomotives. Mechanical Engineers may also  provide design and building services such as heating, ventilating, air conditioning and plumbing.

Education Requirements

 

To become a Mechanical Engineer, one has to:

  • Have the corresponding courses and grades to be admitted into a post-secondary institution.
  • Complete a bachelor?s degree in engineering from a Canadian university program.
  • Pass the Professional Practice Examination administered by PEO, required after graduation.
  • Complete 48 months of on-the-job training, 12 of which must be completed in a Canadian jurisdiction under the supervision of a Professional Engineer licensed in Canada.
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident in Canada
  • License required if offering services directly to the public. The license can be achieved with 4 years experience in the field and successfully pass an examination.
  • To teach engineering, a Ph. D. is required.
