Urban and Land Use Planners
Job Description
An Urban and Land Use Planner prepares plans for zoning, transportation, public utilities, community facilities, parks, housing and related services for cities, towns and rural area. He/she also prepares and recommends plans for the provision of wildlife preserves, national and provincial parks, protection of watersheds and the prevention of soil erosion. Duties include preparing and presenting narrative and graphic program plans to municipal and industry authorities affecting land use, public utilities, community facilities, housing and transportation.
Education Requirements
Planning includes a wide variety of fields. However the general requirements to persuade this career are:
- Grade 12 completion
- Bachelor degree related to planning, such as:
- Geography
- Economics
- Political Science
- Engineering
- Environmental Studie
- Geography
Note: to enroll into a university program, one might need a strong report cards and good marks in courses such as Arts, Mathematics, Geography, Social Studies, Computers and Fine Arts. (Check with the school of your choice for specific marks and courses)
- Many Planners also possess a Master?s degree in planning. This can be achieved through an extra 2 years program that accepts students from undergraduate planning or related fields programs.
- Membership to the Canadian Institute of Planners may also be required.
