Professional Quantity Surveyor

 

Job Description

 

Working closely with architects, engineers, planners and government agencies, a Professional Quantity Surveyor works as a consultant, estimator or manager in construction and development firms. He/she prepares economic feasibility studies, gives advice on construction cost planning and prepares tender documents. A Professional Quantity Surveyor checks and analyzes tenders, manages and coordinates projects, prepares process schedules and sets up and maintains cost control systems. Some of his/hers everyday tasks include: cost planning, value engineering, feasibility studies, cost benefits analysis, lifecycle costing, evaluation, and cost estimation.

 

Education Requirements

 

To become a Quantity Surveyor you need a license. To obtain the Professional Quantity Surveyor?s license, one has to:

  • Complete Grade 12
  • 3 to 4 years bachelor?s degree in Geomatics, Engineering or Survey Engineering or a college diploma in Survey Science or Geomatics.
  • 18 months work experience under the supervision of a qualified Professional Quantity Surveyor.
  • Successful examinations at the end of the studying period will entitle you with a Professional Quantity Surveyor license.
  • Be a member of the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors by completing Institute?s Educational Program, Professional Examinations and Test of Professional Experience.
  • Gold Seal Certification available through a reciprocal agreement with Gold Seal and Quantity Surveyor and CCA Gold Seal for Estimators.  

Note: Additional licenses are available to survey specific areas, such as national parks, Aboriginal lands and northern territories.
