Registered Building Technician/Technologist

 

Job Description

 

Registered Building Technician - inspects the building for hazardous materials, writes reports and follows up with actions to improve the safety of the building. He/She also prepares accurate working or detailed drawings for construction, engineering mapping, architectural companies and other purposes. Works from notes, sketches, calculations, specification sheets and other data.

 

Registered Building Technologist - monitors the quality of the work, the materials used into construction and various economical factors as well as the performance of the project in time and economics. Works with architects, engineers or corporations and may be self employed in the construction process and administration. He/she may also work with government agencies in the areas of administration, code enforcement or facilities management.

 

Education Requirements

 

Registered Building Technician

 

To become a Registered Building Technician requires:

 

  • Completion of Grade 12
    • Courses such as Math, English and Design and Technology may come in handy
  • College diploma in Construction or Engineering related programs or several years experience plus some college
    • There might be specific entry marks and courses requirements (check with the school of your choice for more specific information)
  • Certification with the Architectural Technologist of Ontario
    • In order to achieve the certification, supervised work experience, usually two years can be required.

Registered Building Technologist

 

To become an Architectural Technologist completion of a two to three years college program in architectural technology or a related subject is usually required, followed by structured professional and occupational experience, and also accreditation through the Association of Architectural Technologists of Ontario.

 

High school Requirements

 

  • ENG4C or ENG4U, or Grade 12 English at or above the general level.
  • MCT4C or MGA4U or MCB4U or MDM4U, or Grade 12 Mathematics MTT-4G or MAT-4A at or above the general level, or a more senior mathematics credit.
  • Grade 12 College and Apprenticeship Mathematics (MAP4C) with a Grade 11 Functions (MCF3M) or Grade 11 Functions and Relations (MCR3U). Otherwise, a math assessment will be required.
  • Experience and skills in working with word processing and spreadsheet applications is also required.
  • If lacking the requisite computer skills a computer course would be recommended.

In the mature status situation ? one being 19 years or older, without an OSSD or equivalent he/she will be required to write an Admissions Test.
