Job description

 

A Carpenter is a highly skilled craftsman. The scope of work performed by a Carpenter includes, but is not limited to, the layout, construction, erection, installation, repairs to structures or fixtures, having commercial, residential or industrial applications.

Carpenters usually work with wood, plastic, metal and other types of building materials, which allows them to construct or repair warehouses, hospitals, stadiums and arenas, office or apartment buildings, refineries, houses, bridges, water treatment plants, bleachers and entertainment stages, highways etc. They might be self-employed, or work for different construction or carpentry companies or maintenance departments.   

 

Education Requirements

 

To become a skilled Carpenter, one needs to successfully complete an Apprenticeship.

Some requirements for the Apprenticeship Program are:

  • Grade 12 completion -courses in Math, Arts and English are recommended.
  • 4 years Apprenticeship:
    • Completion of 7,200 hours on the job training under the supervision of a qualified carpenter ? 3 eight weeks in-school sessions.
  • An Interprovincial Standards? Red Seal Certification is available after the Carpenter Certification has been achieved. The Interprovincial Certification will allow work all across Canada. (Ministry of Labour: http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/about/ontque/fs_specialized.html)
