Job Description

 

Crane Operators or Hoisting Engineers usually work at construction sites, ship loading docks, railway yards, offshore drilling rigs or other locations. They work on cranes or draglines to lift, place, and position or remove a large object or heavy equipment. They are usually coordinated by a supervisor by hand signs. They might work for different construction, mining, shipbuilding, railway, and crane rental companies.


 Education Requirements

 

To become a Crane Operator, one has to successfully complete an apprenticeship program. After that, one can take a provincial/territorial certification in the field. Some requirements for the apprenticeship program in Crane Operating are:

 

  • Grade 12 completion with courses in Math, Blueprint reading if possible.
  • Driver license Class D
  • The Apprenticeship Programs may vary in length depending on the equipment. Range is from 1 to 3 years.
  • 6,800 working hours required to graduate from the apprenticeship program.
  • Related work experience or completion of a crane operator program at a post secondary institution can reduce the time required to complete the apprenticeship.

 

The Certification Requirements

 

Crane operator certification is required in some of Canadian provinces. To gain the certification one has to:

 

  • Complete the Crane Operator Apprenticeship Program ( one to three years)
  • Pass the examination at the end of Apprenticeship Program

 

After the certification achievement, the next step is the Interprovincial Exam for Interprovincial Standard?s Red Seal Certification that allows you to work as a Crane Operator anywhere in Canada.

 

As a crane operator it is recommended to keep up with the technology in order to be able to perform your job.
