Job description

 

An equipment Operator works at the construction site operating various heavy equipment such as bulldozers, cranes, trenching machines, graders, loaders, excavators, backhoe, and loaders, used in the construction and maintenance of roads, homes, buildings, bridges, gas and oil pipelines. Duties may also include general maintenance of equipment such as checking oil levels, greasing the equipment, checking for cracked metal and worn hydraulic hoses.

 

Education Requirements

 

To become an Equipment Operator one needs to successfully complete an apprenticeship in the field, which requires:

 

  • Grade 12 or equivalent completed
  • 2,000 to 2,500 hours on-the-job training and could include in-school training at different colleges or industry courses. (Check with the school of your choice for more specific requirements).
  • Examination for certification at the end of the studying is available.
  • This is a voluntary regulated occupation.

Note: Cranes, boring and trenching machines require specialty training.
