Job Description

 

Pipelayers usually work on construction sites. They lay down the heavy pipes used for storm drains, sewers, water lines and fire lines or transportation of natural gas, oil and steam. A Sewer and Watermain Pipelayer instructs and guides equipment operators to prepare trench grades for pipe installation. Handles and installs pipe to proper alignment and grade. Spreads and compacts granular materials to properly bed and protect pipes.

 

Education Requirements

 

On ?the ?job training is a way of getting started into this career, by starting as a helper and gain the experience required. An apprenticeship program that consists of work under the supervision of a qualified, experienced employer. Most of the apprenticeship programs are made up of members of the Union Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of United States and Canada, or local members of the Mechanical Contractors Association of America, the National Association of Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors or the National Fire Sprinkler Association. Apprenticeships usually consist of:

  • Grade 12 completion
  • 4 or 5 years of supervised training
  • Some of the local Unions can offer at least 144 hours of in class technical training with subjects that may include blueprints reading, mathematics, drafting, applied physics, chemistry etc.

Note: This career requires good physical condition, safety conscious and must be able to understand and comply with imposed regulations.
