Skilled Labourer
Job Description
A Skilled Worker works in every sector of the construction industry, including residential, industrial, commercial, institutional, civil engineering, utilities, including pipelines, landscaping and tunneling. Skilled Laborers work may include framing houses masons helpers, assisting in the installation of drains, concrete foundations and basements. Insulation of plumbing on low rise housing, roof shingles and siding and interior trim finish, including but not restricted to doors and windows. He/she is engaged in every aspect of bridge and overpass erection, paving of roads and operation of all pertinent machinery on paving and resurfacing in asphalt or concrete. Craft Laborer works on each phase of sewer and watermain installation, including tunnel boring, trench and open cut. He/she operates all pertinent equipment, tunnel boring machines, locomotives, scoop trams and mucking machines. Is engaged in pre-cast erection, including post-tensioning and pre-stressing of concrete structures, cement finishing, waterproofing, concrete cutting, coring and placing, removing of hazardous materials, including asbestos, pile driving and demolition work. A Skilled Laborer also performs rock drilling and blasting on all construction projects.
Education requirements
Training varies according to particular skill. It may be on the job training with the employer or at Laborers? Union Training Centers.
- Completion of Grade 12
- One to two years training, with a minimum of 2,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a qualified employer
- A Certification in the field is available at the end of the Apprenticeship program, (not required in all provinces, but highly recommended, since many employees may require it). It is achieved through a final examination.
Schools in
Most of the Skilled Laborers learn their skills on the job. Therefore, there are not many schools that offer education for this career. For more information visit:
