Job description

 

A Cement Mason is a skilled concrete trade specialist who finishes both concrete floors and wall surfaces. Some of the tasks that a Cement Mason may perform during his/her career are: inspection of concrete, mix or direct the mixing of the concrete, also pour and spread the concrete, level, smooth and finish the concrete. Therefore, a cement mason is often called a cement finisher.

Education Requirements

To become a Cement Mason, one has to either perform an apprenticeship, or on the job training as the Cement Mason?s helper.

Apprenticeship Requirements

  • Grade 12 is recommended
  • Three years in length, requiring 6,000 work hours - consists of on-the-job training and classroom sessions. (90% on the job and 10% in class training).
  • Minimum of grade 10 education
  • There are no other education requirements, however, high school courses in Drafting, English, Shop and Mathematics are highly recommended.

After the successful completion of the apprenticeship, one can advance in the job with a certification. This certification is not mandatory, but it requires examination of the skills and knowledge in the field. Even if it is voluntary many employees see it as an achievement, therefore providing a better chance to be hired.

On the job training requirements

  • Most of them, but not all require a high school diploma
  • Masonry courses in high school prior to on the job training will be an asset
  • With sufficient work experience and courses in the field, one can qualify to write the certification examination without enrolling into an Apprenticeship program.
