Job description

 

A Concrete Formworker sizes, constructs and dismantles the total system of support for cast-in-place concrete including but not limited to the  mould or sheathing which directly contacts the concrete, all supporting and bracing membes,  all hardware and fastening devices of materials, all interior spacing material, all divisions, water stop and other non concrete material embeddedin the concrete, all exterior bracing material, all scaffolding, safety rails and work platforms attached to or associated with the formwork in commercial buildings, bridges, office buildings, residential environmental structures.

 

Education Requirements

 

There are two types of formwork that could be done, for which there can be different requirement.

 

Formwork Carpenter Requirements

 

An Apprenticeship Program is a recommended way of starting this career.

  • High School diploma preferred ? courses in Math, Arts and English being recommended, but not required.
  • Completion of 7,200 experience hours under the supervision of a qualified carpenter and eight week in-school session.
  • Certification in the field can be achieved upon an examination, after completion of the apprenticeship program. However, this certification is only required in some of Canada?s provinces, but highly recommended in the others.
  • An Interprovincial Standards? Red Seal Certification is available after the Concrete Formworker Certification has been achieved. The Interprovincial Certification will allow work all across Canada.

 

Formwork Laborer Requirements

 

  • Minimum Grade 12 preferred
  • Four months training at local institutions or training by employer.
