Reinforcing Rod Worker

 

Job Description

 

A Reinforcing Rod Worker prepares, lays out and installs reinforcing steel bars (rebar) in concrete structures, foundations or blocks for strengthening; places rebar and secures with steel wire; places stressing post-tensioning cable; uses an oxyacetylene torch or welding equipment or electric cut off saws; guides the loading/unloading of steel bundles off trucks.

 

Education Requirements

 

  • Completion of Grade 12 preferred.
  • Completion of 4,000 hours on-the-job and 14 weeks for in-class studying.
  • The Certification of Qualification can be obtained at the end of the apprenticeship and consists of an examination.
    • A grade of 70% is required to successfully pass and it also has a time limit of three hours. (For more specific information check with the school of your choice.)
  • An Interprovincial Standards? Red Seal Certification is available after the Reinforcing Rod Worker Certification has been achieved. The Interprovincial Certification will allow work all across Canada.

Note: prior work experience in the field may be transferred as credits towards the apprenticeship, therefore reducing its length.
