Job description

 

Masonry is a craft, and an art.  This is learned through hours on on site work, technical school, and a lot of practice.

A Manson constructs unit masonry wall systems with blocks, bricks, stone, air barrier, insulation and reinforcing. The Masons work is varied.  It can range from building a simple wall to ornate exteriors structures. Masons work with a wide variety of both man made, and natural materials.  Tasks include constructing walls, foundations, fireplaces  chimneys, and  smokestacks in industrial and commercial buildings.  Kiln repair and  restoration of designated heritage building and monuments is another specialty of the mason. .

 

Education Requirements

 

To become a Brick & Stone/ Restoration Mason, one has to successfully complete an apprenticeship in the field, and therefore achieve a journeyperson certificate.

 

Apprenticeship Requirements

 

  • Be over the age of 16 and be physically capable to meet the demands of the job.
  • Grade 12 or equivalent is recommended. Courses in math, sketching, and shop classes could be useful.
  • Also to qualify for an apprenticeship as a Masonry, one has to have a Masonry employer sign a contract and agree to hire him/her for the time needed, and also he/she needs a Contract of Apprenticeship with the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities.
  • To successfully graduate from an apprenticeship, one has to have a minimum  of 5,600 hours of training ? 80% on the job, 20% class time. 1,400 hours on-the-job training prior to the in class training is recommended.
  • An Interprovincial Standards? Red Seal Certification is available after the Masonry Certification has been achieved. The Interprovincial Certification qualifies the mason to work  across Canada.
