Job Description

 

A Sheet Metal Worker designs, manufactures, installs and repairs sheet metal parts or products to specified dimensions for industrial, commercial, institutional and residential construction sites. He/she builds as well as installs ductwork for air handling systems, installs sidings on buildings, drafts patterns, measuring, forging, cutting, riveting, shearing, welding, and soldering and balancing items made out of galvanized sheet metal, cooper, nickel, stainless steel, plastic and ceramics.

 

Education Requirements

 

  • Minimum of grade 12 completion
  • An agreement with a suited employer
  • Completion of 9,000 hours of work which includes 24 weeks of in class technical training.
  • Successful completion of the examination to get certified (not required in all provinces, but highly recommended).
  • An Interprovincial Standards? Red Seal Certification is available after the Sheet Metal Worker Certification has been achieved. The Interprovincial Certification will allow work all across Canada.

Note: Previous work experience may qualify as credits towards the apprenticeship, reducing its time length. Also, with enough work experience one can qualify for the Certification examination without enrolling into an apprenticeship program.
