Structural Steel Erector/Ironworker

 

Job Description

 

A Structural Steel Erector usually works at construction sites and industrial settings. The everyday tasks of a Structural Steel Erector are: erects and installs structural steel, bolts and welds steel girders together, moves materials to the top of a structure and maneuvers them into position, calculates loads and selects and attaches correct slings, builds frames and supports for heavy industrial equipment and builds industrial conveyor systems.

 

Education Requirements

 

  • Grade 12 completed preferred, courses in Mathematics may also come in handy.
  • 3 year Apprenticeship Program.
  • At least 4,500, and up to 6,000 working hours supervised by a qualified employee in the field.
  • 10-week block and two 7-weeks block of technical training
  • Examination for Certification in the field is available at the end of the apprenticeship program, however it is not required in all of the Canadian provinces, but it is highly recommended. 
  • A Red Seal certification is also available for work all across Canada.
  • This is a voluntary, regulated occupation
