Glazier / Metal Mechanic

 

Job Description

 

Glaziers and Metal Mechanics usually work for glass installation contractors, repair and glass fabrication shops, and interior design and architecture firms. A Glazier/ Metal Mechanic usually cuts, fits and installs a variety of glazing materials in wooden and metal frames for a variety of purposes, including glass doors, windows, mirrors, storefronts, display cases, skylights and curtain walls, using putty, moulding, rubber, lead and all types of mastics. They use design drawings and installation diagrams, and work in the new home building, renovation, institutional and commercial construction sectors.

 

Education requirements

 

An apprenticeship is required to become a Glazier & Metal Mechanic.

 

  • Minimum Grade 12 preferred
  • Four years apprenticeship program, which involves:
    • An agreement with a suitable employer in the field
    • The completion of 8,000 hours of work experience with 24 weeks of technical training.
  • An examination at the end of the apprenticeship program may qualify you for a certification in that province (the certification is required in Quebec, but highly recommended in the other provinces).
  • An Interprovincial Standards? Red Seal Certification is available after the Glazier/Metal Mechanic Certification has been achieved. The Interprovincial Certification will allow work all across Canada.
