Job Description

 

A Drywall Acoustic Mechanic measures, cuts and installs drywall sheets to form walls and ceilings in buildings and other structures. Some duties also include steel stud framing, structural steel stud framing and insulation framing. Also he/she installs acoustic and other special ceilings, and secures laths to walls and ceiling.

 

A Drywall Finisher and Plasterer applies filling compound and tape to wallboard to prepare the surface for a sequence of different stages; such as painting, wallpapering, special coating and various types of texturing. Some of the tasks that a Drywall Finisher and Plasterer may encounter during his/her career are: molding, creating exterior stucco, painting and ornamenting.

 

Education Requirements

 

Both careers of Drywall Acoustic Mechanic and Drywall Finisher and Plasterer are non-regulated occupations. An apprenticeship is recommended.

 

Requirements for an Apprenticeship:

 

  • Grade 12 recommended
  • Apprenticeship Contract with a qualified employer
  • 5,400 hours in duration, with two blocks of in-school training, each of 8-10 weeks ( 3.5 to 5 years in length)
  • Successfully pass a certificate of qualification examination at the end of the apprenticeship. This certification may be required in some provinces and by some of the employees, therefore is highly recommended.
