Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer

Job Description

A Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer works in all sectors of construction. He/she fabricates, installs, tests, maintains and inspects a wide selection of fire protection systems, such as underground water supply, standpipes and hose rack systems, fire hydrants, wet and dry pipe systems, low and high pressure CO2 systems, clean agent fire suppression systems and foam systems. Their everyday tasks include installing pipes and fittings, valves and apparatus, actuation and detection devices and fire pumps, in all types of buildings including airports, airplane hangars, oil refineries, chemical plants, offices, schools and dwellings. They also have to be able to read blueprints or diagrams, good visual capabilities are an asset, good organizational and time management-skills, good communication skills and good physical condition to climb, reach, bend, stretch and work in confined spaces.

Education Requirements

  • Grade 12 completion
  • Agreement with a qualified employer in the field
  • Completion of 7,200 hours under the qualified employer?s supervision divided. This program is divided into 4 terms of 1,800 hours of work and it might take around 3.5, 4 years in length.
  • Final examination for certification is available (not required, but highly recommended).
  • Red Seal Certification is also available for work all across Canada and is obtained after an examination. This is a certified trade regulated under the Trades Qualification and Apprenticeship Act.
