Job Description

 

Construction Millwrights install, maintain and troubleshoot industrial machinery, mechanical equipment and other automated and robotic systems. They work for both contractors and/or engineering departments working in close association with other construction trades. As a Construction Millwright, this job involves installing turbines, boilers, reactors, conveyer systems and automated systems. Knowledge of both construction and manufacturing processes, metallurgy, welding, blue print reading and precise measuring instruments are required.  

 

Education Requirements

 

To become a Construction Millwright one has to successfully complete an apprenticeship program, which requires:

  • Grade 12 preferred

 

The Construction Millwright Apprenticeship Program includes:

 

  • 8,000 hours of training under the supervision of a qualified journeyperson. This is divided into 4 periods of 2,000 hours of training.
  • The apprenticeship will take from 3 to 4 years, being divided into 90% on-the-job and 10% classroom training.
  • Certification in Construction Millwright is available after the completion of the apprenticeship program. However it is not required in all the provinces, but highly recommended.
  • Once certified, one can apply for an Interprovincial Certification ? Red Seal for work outside the province.
