Job description

 

Boilermakers construct, install, and maintain water tanks, boilers and other heavy metal structures. They also repair stationary steam boilers and boiler house auxiliaries. Boilermakers are usually employed in the building manufacturing and power generation plants, in shipbuilding, and other industrial projects. Their work involves the use of hand and power tools, plumb bobs, levels, wedges, or turnbuckles. Some of the tasks of a Boilermaker include loading and unloading materials, rigging materials for movement, directing crane operations, assembling/disassembling scaffolds and platforms, changing crane booms, inspecting and caring for rigging accessories and equipment, burning, gouging and welding, removing and replacing tubes, interpreting blueprints, laying out components, erecting support steel beams and columns, using various welding machines, aligning and fitting components.

 

Education Requirements

 

  • Successful completion of a Boilermaker apprenticeship is required in all Canadian provinces.
  • Alberta and Quebec require Boiling certification which is only voluntary but recommended in the other provinces of the country.

Apprenticeship Requirements

 

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Pre-assessment examination
  • 26 weeks of technical training:
    • Pre-Entry - 2 weeks
      Basic Training -8 weeks
      Intermediate Training -8 weeks
      Advanced Training -8 weeks
  • 6,600 hours on the job training monitored by the Coordinator, under direction of the Boilermaker Apprenticeship Commitment (usually takes around 4 to 5 years).  

Certification

Certification is required in the provinces of Alberta and Quebec. In the other Canadian provinces it is only voluntary, but highly recommended. After the completion of the apprenticeship program, one is awarded a journeyperson certification.

In some provinces and territories, one can also progress from a journeyperson certification to a boilermaker certification if having over four years of on-the-job experience and college or industry courses in the field.

For a certification that can be used throughout all Canada, one has to attempt the Interprovincial Exam to qualify for the Interprovincial Standards? Red Seal.
