Job description
An Electrician plans installations from blueprints and specifications in compliance with the electrical code on residential, commercial and industrial buildings, installs panel boards, switches boxes, pulls boxes and other related devices; measures, cuts, threads, bends, assembles and installs conduits and other kinds of electrical conductor enclosures which connect panels, boxes, outlets and other devices. Electricians also test equipment and systems. A Construction and Maintenance Electrician may also work in new technology of building controls and communication equipment and in compliance with the electrical code.
The requirements for the Electrician Apprenticeship are:
- Grade 12 completion with strong English, Math and Physics
- Enter into an agreement with an employer
- The completion of 9,000 hours worked under the supervision of a journeyperson (approximately 5 years). This also includes 28 weeks of technical training (820 in ? class hours).
- This is a compulsory regulated trade
- Red Seal certification is available and highly recommended
Note: Previously acquired work experience and technical training related to the trade may be assessed to qualify for credits towards the apprenticeship, reducing its length.
