Job description

 

Lineworkers usually work in the heavy industrial, and institutional and commercial construction sectors. There are two kinds of Lineworker: Power and Construction Lineworker.

 

Power Lineworker ? operates, maintains and services power lines used to conduct electricity from generating plants to consumers, and constructs or assembles a system of power lines used to conduct electricity from generating plants to consumers. Employment is often with utility companies or line/utility contractors.

 

Construction Lineworker ? constructs or assembles a system of power lines used to conduct electricity from generating plants to consumers. Employment is often within the construction industry.

 

Education Requirements

 

  • Minimum Grade 12
  • Completion of 8,000 working hours under the supervision of a qualified journeyperson in the field. (This may take around 4 years) for Power Lineworker. The construction lineworker?s apprenticeship is slightly shorter ? 3.5 years, consisting of 7,000 work hours.
  • Interprovincial Standards? Red Seal certification is also available.  This certification allows the worker to work across Canada and it can be taken after the certification as a journeyperson into the field.
  • This is a voluntary, regulated occupation
