Job Description

 

Civil Engineering is so broad, both in the education and practice of the profession, it is divided into a number of specialized fields:

 

Domestic and Rural Engineering ? plans and designs municipal water facilities, sewage treatement plants, storm water and solid waste management, and the control of rivers and air pollution. Two branches of Domestic and Rural Engineering are:

 

  • Municipal Engineering - plans, designs and implements water supply, treatement, storage and distribution systems; plans, designs and implements wastewater collection, treatement and disposal systems. Typically involved in the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater systems.
  • Water Resources Engineering - urban and rural hydrology and control of drainage systems, creeks and rivers. Plans, designs, and implements stormwater management systems and undertakes Flood Risk studies.

Structural Engineering ? Designs bridges, skyscrapers, factories and power plant buildings, often working in close co-operation with architects to ensure that the functional and aestetically pleasing structure which the architect creates, is structurally sound and safe for human use or occupation.

 

Transporation Engineer ? plans, designs, constructs, and maintains transportation systems such as roads, airports, harbours, railways, subways and other forms of public transit.

 

Hydrotechnical Engineer ? works in the control and utilization of water systems such as rivers, lakes and oceans and hydraulic structures such as dams and canals.

 

Geotechnical Engineer ? determines the geological conditions associated with the construction of structures such as foundations, tunnels and dams fallowing careful assessment of the engineering characteristics of soil, rock and groundwater, and the consideration of factors related to safety and economics.

 

Construction Engineer ? plans and schedules projects from the start to finish and is responsible for seeing that the work is done safely, on time, within budget and accordance with the designer?s specifications.

 

Education Requirements

 

To become a Civil Engineer, same as all the other branches of engineering, you require the following:

·        Bachelor?s degree in Engineering.

·        48 months of on-the-job experience, 12 of which to be completed in a Canadian jurisdiction under the supervision of a licensed Engineer.

·        Be a citizen or permanent resident in Canada.

·        Pass the Professional Practice Examination administered by PEO.

·        License required if offering services directly to the public. The license can be achieved through an examination, after 4 years experience in the field.

·        To teach engineering, a Ph. D. is required.

  • Some colleges and universities offer 5-year master?s degree programs in Engineering.
