WHY COR PREQUALIFICATION IS ON EVERY CONTRACTOR'S RADAR THIS FALL.
As 2026 approaches, COR (Certificate of Recognition) prequalification has become one of the most talked-about topics in Ontario’s construction industry, and for good reason.
More and more public buyers, including Infrastructure Ontario, Metrolinx, and several municipalities, are now requiring COR to bid on major projects. With many of these requirements taking effect in the new year, contractors are racing to get qualified.
Being COR certified shows that your company has the core elements of a safety management system in place, from written policies and training to risk assessments, incident reporting, and auditing. It’s a way to prove you’re serious about health and safety.
For many businesses, it’s also a smart financial move. Achieving and maintaining COR can have a positive effect on your WSIB premiums, stronger safety performance, and better eligibility for large-scale contracts.
The process however takes time and is intensive. You need to have 12 months of records available for audit to prove that you have implemented the system. You need to give yourself enough time to implement the management system and get audited by the certifying partner. Obtaining COR can be a lot of work but the rewards are worth it.
If you’re a GVCA member looking to start or strengthen your COR journey, Peninsula Canada can help. Our health and safety consultants can help you understand where your safety program stands and what steps to take next.
Get ahead of the year-end rush.
