DESIGNING A CIRCULAR FUTURE FOR CONSTRUCTION
Adopting circularity in construction could answer a lot of questions and design a better solution that will save money, significantly reduce waste, and better integrate designers and constructors.
Circularity in the construction industry emphasizes a sustainable, circular economy by minimizing waste, maximizing material reuse, and regenerating natural systems. It shifts from a linear "take, make, dispose" model to a closed-loop system throughout a building's lifecycle. Key strategies include designing for durability, disassembly, and reuse; using modular and prefabricated methods; incorporating recycled and renewable materials; and practicing deconstruction and material recovery. These approaches help reduce embodied carbon, lower costs, and decrease reliance on virgin resources.
Taking advantage of a shared database (think Facebook Marketplace) and communication model allows for preplanning for waste, making it available for the market to reduce waste, to drive down cost and increase collaboration.
GVCA is facilitating dialogue and making introductions to participate in designing a better model for all. Please reach out to me at jeff@gvca.org to learn more and for invitations to join the discussion.
