Allyship Is More Than a Buzzword
By Mandy Bujold, Manager of Industry & Community Partnerships, GVCA
Allyship has become a bit of a buzzword lately, especially in predominantly male industries like construction. While it’s encouraging to see the word show up in conversations, panels, and keynotes, I think it’s important we pause and ask: are we making allyship more than a word?
At the Canadian Association of Women in Construction conference a few weeks ago, the importance of allyship came up again and again. It was recognized as a critical piece of the puzzle if we want to see real change. Yet, at a conference meant to move things forward, there were only a handful of men in the room. That’s not a criticism of the association—they’re doing incredible work—but it was a reminder. If we’re truly serious about progress, we need to make sure the right people are present for the conversation. Change requires participation, not just acknowledgment.
That’s why, for our upcoming Women in Construction HERIZON event, we’re taking a step outside our comfort zone. Traditionally known as a women-focused networking evening (the “Sparkler”), this year we’re opening the doors wider. HERIZON will still celebrate women, lift them up, and provide space for meaningful connection but we also want to welcome all allies including males, other supporters, and champions into the room.
Allyship isn’t just about saying you support women in construction. It’s about showing up. It’s about being present, listening, and lending your voice and influence to move the industry forward.
The HERIZON is, at its heart, a celebration and a look ahead to 2026. It’s also an opportunity to set the tone for the year ahead. We want to prove that GVCA can start not just with buzzwords, but with action.
So, if this resonates with you—if you consider yourself an ally and want to be part of the conversations and the progress—I encourage you to join us at The HERIZON. Together, we can turn allyship from a buzzword into a force for change.
