Three consortiums have issued their proposals to design, build, finance and maintain the new Halton Region Consolidated Courthouse in Oakville.

Infrastructure Ontario prequalified three teams for the project: EllisDon Infrastructure Justice, Escarpment Justice Alliance, and Plenary PCL Justice. The groups were selected for the project based on their capacity and experience to manage a project of this size and scope.

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of the Attorney General will evaluate the proposals, and announce their preferred bidder in the spring. The contract value is also expected to be announced at that time. Construction is expected to begin in late 2020.

The Halton Region Consolidated Courthouse will be a new 25-courtroom facility that brings the operations of the Superior Court of Justice and Ontario Court of Justice operations in Milton and Burlington together in a single location. The building will be designed to achieve LEED Silver certification, with a focus on energy efficiency, healthy indoor environments and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

The new building will feature new technology to make the court run more efficiently to help speed up the criminal justice system in the Halton Region. For example, witnesses and other vulnerable persons will be able to appear before court from remote locations through video conferencing or from a secure room through closed-circuit television.

Halton is one of the fastest-growing regions in the province, with a projected growth rate of over 60 percent between now and 2041. The new courthouse facility will help families settle disputes faster, reduce time-to-trial, and better serve the needs of people living and working in the region.
