Update on financial relief and 2019 Safety Groups

I’m sure each of you, like others across the province and beyond, are adjusting to the extraordinary times in which we find ourselves. I want to reassure you that the WSIB is here to support the people of Ontario during this difficult time. We have already introduced a number of measures to help ease the strain many are feeling right now.

Financial relief

We recently announced details of our financial relief package that allows businesses to defer reporting and paying their premiums until August 31, 2020. No interest will be accrued on outstanding premium payments and no penalties will be charged during this six-month deferral period.

Also, we have determined that costs associated with COVID-19 related claims will not be allocated at an employer or class level. Instead, they will be allocated on a Schedule-wide basis and there will be no change in premium rates for 2020.

2019 Safety Groups

We have decided to cancel all 2019 Safety Groups program audits (onsite and desk), and instead will process 2019 rebates based on 2018 achievement scores. The 2018 achievement score is the most recent, verified data available and would be pro-rated from the 5% maximum rebate in 2018 to the 7% maximum rebate for 2019.  As ever, businesses charged with and/or under investigation of a fatal claim will not be eligible for financial incentives.

Our forecasted rebate payout amount for the 2019 Safety Group program is approximately $32 million. We want to reward businesses who made investments in workplace health and safety with the rebates they deserve. We are turning our attention to closing out the program and finalizing dates.
