Announcement of the creation of six Workforce Alliances
As Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, I am pleased to share important new actions to support Canada’s workers.
In a rapidly changing world, the Government of Canada is focusing on what we can control: building a stronger more resilient Canada. Canada’s labour market is experiencing sustained pressure from tariffs, skills shortages, supply chain disruptions and broader economic shifts. In response, we aim to transform the economy to one that is more sustainable, and independent, built on the solid foundation of strong Canadian industries and bolstered by diverse international trade partners.
Workforce Alliances being struck in six priority areas
Last week, I announced the creation of six Workforce Alliances unified by one core mission: to identify and address pressing labour market challenges and to coordinate public and private investments in skills development to produce lasting opportunities for Canada’s workers where they are most needed to Build Canada Strong.
The Workforce Alliances focus on the workforce needs of six priority areas, which have a significant impact on aspects of everyday life for Canadians:
Housing and Construction: central to nation building projects, residential construction and affordable housing.
Transportation and Supply Chains: essential for removing internal trade barriers and improving the movement of goods within Canada and to international markets.
Advanced Manufacturing: advancing the adoption of technology and innovation (AI and robotics) is critical for trade competitiveness.
Energy and Electricity: important for meeting clean energy and power needs, as well as economic security.
Mining and Minerals: the success of Canada’s critical minerals strategy and major projects is vital for resource sovereignty and global competitiveness.
Care Economy: supports for key caregiving systems have the potential to unlock stronger labour force participation, economic resilience, and gender equity across all sectors.
This marks an important step in building a workforce that is skilled, adaptable and ready to meet Canada’s economic challenges.
The Workforce Alliances will bring together employers, unions, educational institutions, industry associations and Indigenous partners to facilitate coordinated, rapid responses to common challenges. Each Alliance will be supported by a broader membership and network of stakeholders, including small, medium and large enterprises, equity deserving communities, youth and other stakeholders. They will also work collaboratively with provincial and territorial governments.
